Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a passport?

Getting a passport starts first with either downloading the application online from https://www.state.gov or by going to the local Post Office and requesting an application.  You will need to make an appointment at the post office in order to get your picture taken and your application, with corresponding documentation, bundled together and sent to the State Department for processing.  The process can take up to four weeks to get your passport back in the mail, but adults’ passports last up to ten years, so it’s worth the wait.

Do I need a passport to go on a cruise?

If you are boarding a cruise ship from a port in the United States, at this time, you can sail with an original birth certificate or a passport.  If using a birth certificate, you must also have a government-issued picture ID in order to board the ship.  If you intend to fly to a foreign destination in order to board the ship, you will need a passport.  You cannot fly out or into the United States without a passport.

How much do you charge to work with a client?

Main Street Travel does not charge fees to work with clients, except in one instance: if you are ONLY booking air reservations, then a service fee of $40. Per person is charged.  However, if you are booking a cruise, hotel rooms, rental cars, or anything else that will pay us commission, then there is no fee for the air portion.

Why do I need travel insurance?

Travel insurance is an important part of your trip.  Main Street Travel uses Allianz, an insurance provider with a very long history in the travel business.  While you can be prepared for most things, it’s always the little things that can ruin your vacation: loss of job, an injury that happens before the trip and is serious enough that your doctor advises you not to travel, a death in the family, or unfortunately: a hospital stay DURING your trip.  Think of this: when you leave the country, your health insurance benefits do not follow you.  You can find yourself saddled with huge medical bills from eating bad food, tripping down stone stairs, or even the airline losing your luggage.  It’s better in these times to safeguard yourself and your belongings!
